Karst aquifers constitute a significant portion of groundwater supplies across various regions worldwide. These aquifers are typically characterized by highly permeable conduits alongside a low-permeability matrix. The notable contrast in permeability between the conduits and the matrix results in the channeling of groundwater flow into the conduits. Consequently, this leads to escalated flow velocities and considerably shorter travel times in comparison to conventional porous aquifers.
Despite their importance, the development and implementation of mathematical models for karst aquifers pose significant challenges. Nonetheless, they remain essential for the sustainable management of groundwater resources. This course aims to address these challenges by focusing on key learning objectives:
1. Understanding the concepts underlying distributed numerical models for karst systems.
2. Familiarizing with the coupling approach of MODFLOW-CFP, which integrates Darcy-Weisbach principles encompassing both laminar and turbulent flow within a MODFLOW continuum.
3. Applying MODFLOW-CFP to idealized karst systems, while comprehending the requisite settings and parameters.
4. Analyzing the results derived from MODFLOW-CFP simulations to gain insights into karst aquifer dynamics.
On-line Course - May 29th - 31st, 2024, Register preferably before May 17th, 2024
